Metadata is the data that talks about the data. Information contained in all digital files that can pose a threat to the security of the company if it falls into the wrong hands. And if they are not controlled, they often fall into the wrong hands. In this sense, it is essential to use a metadata processing tool that protects the file server of your company from potential information gaps.
In Adarsus we have the perfect solution: MetaClean, our software designed for metadata management. A professional tool with an intuitive interface and great usability with which you can incorporate, delete and edit the metadata of the digital files contained in your server in a simple and comfortable way. In fact, you can do it manually or create a metadata policy template so that MetaClean Command Line implement it automatically.
MetaCleanCL.exe -h
PARAMETERS TO EDIT/DELETE METADATA
---------------------------------------
Action parameters:
---------------------
-h --> Show help.
-d [path to input directory] --> Directory containing the files to process.
-watchDir [path to directory to monitor] --> Monitor the local directory or network directory to automatically process the metadata of added or modified documents. If the -watchDir parameter is set, then the -d and -f parameters are not allowed.
*Note: The -watchDir parameter requires a MetaClean CL Extended Edition license.
-type [mo,oo,pdf,mm,zip,7z] --> File types to process: mo (Microsoft Office), oo (Open/Libre Office), pdf (PDF files), mm (Multimedia files -images, audio and video-), zip, 7z.
-search [metasearch-N] --> Among the existing files in the specified directory, search for those whose metadata match those indicated in the metasearch-N.properties file, this file is located in the installation path.
-f [path to file to process] --> Processes a single file. If the -f parameter is given, the -d, -r and -type parameters will not be allowed.
-metadata [template-N|remove|export|view] --> Set, Delete, Export or Display the metadata of your files:
template-N: Edit the template-N.properties file and INDICATE THE VALUE for each of the metadata (the template-N.properties file is located in the MetaClean Command Line installation directory).
remove: All metadata in your files will be removed.
export -fileExp [full_path_to_excel_file]: The metadata of the selected files will be saved to the specified Excel file.
view: Displays the metadata of the specified file.
*Note: For files of type Multimedia (mm) only remove and view are available.
Optional Parameters:
----------------------
-r --> Search for files in the directory and sub-directories.
-o [path to output DIRECTORY] --> The files with the processed metadata are saved in another directory, the input files remain untouched.
-protectPdfSigned [true|false] --> Set to true so that signed PDF files are not modified, by default they will be modified.
-log [path to logFILE] --> Save the entire process log to a log file.
-logSize [limit] --> Writes between a maximum set of 5 files, when the log file reaches the specified number of Mb (limit) another file will be created.
limit: Maximum number of MegaBytes to write in each of the 5 log files.
Other Parameters:
-----------------
-v --> Shows the version of MetaClean Command Line.
-MetaCleanID --> Shows the identification code of your license (necessary to register the product).
-activate [activation_code] --> Activates the purchased license.
*This example shows a description of each of the available options.
MetaCleanCL.exe -f "C:\Documents and Setting "MyDocs" -metadata view
*This example displays the metadata of the specified file.
MetaCleanCL.exe -d "C:\Documents and Setting" -r -type pdf,mo,mm -metadata remove -o "C:\tmp" -log "C:\tmpclean.log" -logSize 1
*In this example it searches for PDF, Microsoft Office and Multimedia files (even inside ZIP files) inside the directory «C:\Documents and Setting» (including subdirectories), deletes all their metadata and stores each of the files inside the directory «C:\tmp», the original files remain untouched, the log of the process is stored in the file clean_0.log, when this file reaches 1 Mb another file clean_1.log will be created, and so on until creating a maximum of 5 files where the rotation will be circular.
MetaCleanCL.exe -watchDir "C:\wamp64\wwwww "MyDocs" -r -type pdf,mo -metadata remove -protectPdfSigned true
*This example removes the metadata of PDF files (except signed files) and Microsoft Office files from the directory and subdirectories specified (by the -r option). When this process is finished, MetaClean CL will monitor the directory (and subdirectories) «C:\wamp64\wwww\myDocs» detecting when a file is created or modified and automatically deleting its metadata. The output of the process will be displayed on the terminal (no log file will be created).
start /B MetaCleanCL.exe -watchDir "C:\wamp64\wwwmyDocs" -r -type pdf,mo -metadata remove
*Runs the process in background mode (Windows)
java -jar MetaCleanCL.jar -watchDir "/wamp64/www/myDocs" -r -type pdf,mo -metadata remove &
*Runs the process in background mode (Linux/Unix)
java -jar MetaCleanCL.jar -d "/home/myUser/Documents" -type pdf,oo,mo,zip -metadata template-1
*In this example it searches for all PDF, Open/Libre Office, Microsoft Office and ZIP files within the directory «/home/myUser/Documents» (subdirectories not included) and applies the previously customised metadata template (template-1.properties) to each of the input files by overwriting the original files.
java -jar MetaCleanCL.jar -d "/home/myUser/Documents" -r -type pdf,oo,mo,zip -metadata export -fileExp "/home/myUser/tmp/metadata.xls"
*In this example all PDF, Open/Libre Office and Microsoft Office files are searched (also ZIP files) in the directory «/home/myUser/Documents» (subdirectories included) and the metadata of these files is stored in the file «/home/myUser/tmp/metadata.xls», the original files are not modified. This option is very useful in auditing processes.
java -jar MetaCleanCL.jar -d "/home/myUser/Documents" -r -type pdf,xlsx,zip -search metasearch-1 -metadata remove
*This example searches the metadata of PDF and Excel files (also ZIP files) in the directory «/home/myUser/Documents» (subdirectories included) for files whose metadata matches that specified in the metasearch-1.properties file, these files will have their metadata deleted.
MetaClean Command Line is our version of MetaClean for file servers. A tool that aims to integrate into such environments, run with little resource consumption and operate from a command line. In this sense, users only have to invoke MetaClean Command Line from scripts to be able to implement it in the server files and carry out a deliberate processing of their metadata. An unbeatable strategy to prevent the leakage of sensitive information.
In addition, MetaClean Command Line also runs automatically over your file server. Its programmed functionalities allow the organisation's management to establish automatic enforcement of pre-developed metadata policies. In this way, all files will contain only those metadata approved for publication, while confidential files will be removed as an organisational protection mechanism.
The automation made possible by MetaClean Command Line safeguards the security of the organisation in which it is implemented at all times. Our software performs fully automatic monitoring of selected drives. Real-time monitoring is designed to detect any file created or modified and immediately apply the configured metadata policy to it. In other words: all the server architecture will be defended.
But this function WatchDir is not the only additional function of the MetaClean Command Line. Our data processing tool also has a functionality that allows the user to locate files on the file server by means of their metadata content. In this sense, the metadata becomes a categorisation and retrieval tool with MetaClean. The metadata can be edited to take full advantage of this function.
Another of the main functionalities of MetaClean Command Line is the generation of management reports of the metadata. A tool that allows us to analyse as a whole both the implementation of the metadata policy and the execution of all the edits, deletions and manual additions made to the metadata of a file server. In this way, it is possible to detect potential points for improvement in order to create the necessary optimisation actions.
Similarly, MetaClean offers the possibility to export the metadata of documents from the organisation's server to Excel files. Another key tool for organising metadata and developing appropriate metadata strategies. After all, the leakage of sensitive or critical metadata to the outside world through client server structures can lead to serious reputational and/or financial losses for the whole company. Data is power. Protect the power of your company.
